Knee arthroscopy (key hole surgery)

A knee arthroscopy (scope) is a minimally invasive (key hole) surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat various conditions of the knee joint. During the procedure, anorthopaedic surgeon inserts a special instrument called an arthroscope through a small incision in the knee. The arthroscope is then used to examine the inside of the joint and take pictures that can be used for further diagnosis. In some cases, the surgeon may use special instruments to perform repairs, such as removing torn cartilage or repairing a ligament.

Knee arthroscopy is a relatively quick procedure that typically lasts 30 minutes. Prior to the operation, medical imaging tests such as X-rays or MRI scans may be taken in order to gain a better understanding of the patient’s condition. After the procedure is complete, the patient can usually go home the same day.

The recovery process after a knee arthroscopy is usually straightforward. Initially, patients may need to keep their leg elevated and apply ice packs to reduce swelling and pain. Physical therapy can also be beneficial in helping restore strength and range of motion in the joint. For the first two weeks, most patients are advised to avoid activities that put too much strain on the knee, such as running or jumping. With proper care and rehabilitation, most people are able to return to their normal activities within a few weeks.
