Bunions
Bunions are bony bumps that form at the base of the big toe, causing swelling, soreness, or redness around the joint. They are the result of an imbalance of forces between the muscles and tendons that control the big toe, leading to a mal alignment. Pressure is usually placed on the inside of the big toe joint which then results in a bony bump forming at the base.
Treatments for bunions vary depending on the severity of the case. For mild cases, shoe modifications such as padding or arch supports may be helpful. Additionally, medications such as anti-inflammatories can help reduce inflammation and pain. More severe cases may require surgery to correct the mal alignment of the toe joint. This can be done by cutting and realigning the bones (osteotomy) or a fusion (arthrodesis) of an arthritic joint.
While surgery can alleviate bunion pain and correct deformity, it is important to note that there are risks associated with any surgical procedure. It is essential to discuss potential complications and outcomes with an orthopedic surgeon to determine the best treatment plan.
