Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS)
CTS is a condition affecting the wrist and hand which can cause pain, numbness, and tingling in the fingers and thumb. It occurs when the median nerve—which runs from the forearm into the palm of the hand—becomes compressed as it passes through a narrow passageway called the carpal tunnel. CTS is most often caused by repetitive motion of the wrist and hand, such as typing, or using a mouse for long periods of time. Other causes include conditions such as arthritis, obesity, diabetes, and pregnancy. Treatment options include wearing a splint, anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, cortisone injections or in severe cases surgery may be recommended.
